If one is suffering from excessive snoring, one might need to seek medical attention if suffering from conditions like sleep apnea. For most people, sleeping on the side instead of on the back and use of a pillow has been found to be pretty effective in reducing snoring. However, it may not possible to control the position one sleeps in during the whole night. Therefore, even if one goes to bed by lying on the side, it may not be late before one changes the position to sleeping on the back and snore without realizing it. The use of pillow, which is not too soft, has also been found to be helpful in reducing snoring.
Adjustable beds have been found to be very effective in reducing snoring without requireing one to sleep on the side or on an uncomfortable pillow. The fact that the upper part of the body can be raised using an adjustable bed, the factors that contribute to snoring are diminished.

Eating spicy food before sleeping can cause acidity and heart burn. The acidic fluids from the stomach can flow into the esophagus while sleeping. This not only causes damage to the esophagus but also contribute to the aggravating snoring. If one sleeps with the upper portion of the body raised by sleeping on an adjustable bed, the gravity helps to prevent the rise of acid from the stomach to the esophagus and mitigates snoring.

What are the dimensions of a twin bed?

A twin bed is 39 inch wide and 75 inch long.

Are twin size beds only for kids use?

A twin size bed is good for both kids and grownups. Since the maximum width on a twin bed is about 3 and a quarter feet, only one person can sleep on it comfortably. That is why twin beds are also referred to as single beds.

Is the standard length of 75 inches for twin bed good enough for tall people?

In dormitories and hospitals, you might often find twin beds that are longer than the standard twin bed. These are called “Twin Extra Long Beds”. A twin extra long bed is 80 inch long which means it is 5 inches longer than a standard twin bed.

Some people also need a wider bed but cannot accommodate a full or a queen size bed in their rooms. A super single bed with the dimensions of 48 in x 84 in is also available to meet the needs of these people. As you must have noticed, a super single bed is 11 inches wider than a standard twin bed and 9 inches longer than a standard twin bed.

Some people who find the standard twin bed sizes not too comfortable for them, end up having customized beds made as per their own specifications. The problem with customized bed sizes is the unavailability of bed linen that would fit correctly on the custom sized mattress.

Is a super single bed same as a full bed or a double bed?

Full bed or a double bed mean the same. A full bed or a double is 54 inches wide and 75 inches in length. Interestingly, the full bed or the double bed comes in only one standard size. There is no “California version” for a full bed!

What are the dimensions of a king bed?

King size beds are of the biggest size amongst the standard bed sizes available in the market. A standard king bed is bigger than a standard queen bed in width by 16 inches but is of the same length as the standard queen bed. Therefore, the dimensions of a standard king bed are 76 in wide x 80 in long.

You can see the different types of king beds, besides many types of queen beds, twin beds and full beds in our furniture store!

What is a California king bed?

Many people find the length of a king size bed to be a bit short. Therefore, another version of a king bed also called as California King bed is also available in the market. A California King bed is 72 in wide and 84 in long which means it is 4 inches less in width than the standard king bed but it is also 4 inches more in length than a standard king bed.

How does the height vary with the size of a bed?

The height of the bed is not standardized like the widths and lengths of the king beds, queen beds, twin beds and full beds are. The width and length of the bed are standardized so that the mattresses and the bed linens can be standardized too. However, the mattresses are available in standard thickness sizes so that the fitted sheets can be used on them. Bed linens packages would be marked specifically for a deep fit if they are designed for thicker mattresses.

Since the overall height of a bed is the sum of the height of the bed frame, the height of the box spring and the height of the mattress, it can vary greatly from a very low size to one that needs the bed side steps to get on or off the bed. Some people who prefer lower height beds use just the box spring and the mattress without using a bed frame. This makes it easier for the users to get on or off of the bed.

Therefore, the height of the bed is not part of the standardized width and length dimensions.

Do king beds come with storage options?

The availability of the storage option is not dependent on the size of the bed. It depends on the design of the bed. King beds, queen beds, twin beds or full beds – any of them can be designed to have different storage options like the ones that open from the top or like having one or multiple drawers that open from the sides.

Do adjustable beds come in king bed sizes?

Adjustable beds and adjustable mattress are available for king sizes also. Dual adjustable mattresses are also available for king beds. Dual adjustable mattresses allow the firmness to be adjusted independently on either side of the bed depending on the preferences of the user. King size adjustable beds also allow the lower and upper portions of the bed to be raised.

Depending on the features available in an adjustable bed, one can also get side rails that can be adjusted for a king bed. Side rails can prevent an elderly or a kid from falling off of the bed. They also help to get on or off the bed.

If you are wondering about any health benefits of an automatic adjustable bed, you would be pleased to know that there are many. An automatic adjustable bed can potentially reduce your medical bills thereby improving your financial health too. I am yet to find any disadvantage of having an automatic adjustable bed in my bedroom. Both my spouse and I love our automatic adjustable bed.

Adjustable Beds With The Right Mattress

Most often the adjustable bases do not match with their mattresses. The adjustable beds need to have a retaining bar at the foot of the bed to prevent bridging of the mattress. Such workarounds do not make an adjustable bed look good and you might not want to put such a bed in your bedroom. However, the picture of adjustable beds is not so bleak!

Today’s adjustable beds use mattresses that do not fold or bridge when the bed changes positions. The absence of the retaining bars gives the bed a more professional look. You can also use normal bed linen to dress up your bed, which can make the adjustable bed look great and merge in the décor of your bedroom.

Adjustable bed frames can be fitted inside conventional beds that hide all the moving parts of the adjustable bed when in the flat position. Such bed frames come in wood or metal with the finish of your choice. As a matter of fact, when such an adjustable bed is in the flat position, it is not even possible to distinguish it from a normal conventional bed!

Hospital bed is a necessity for those have restrictions of movement due to age or injury. A hospital bed allows to configure itself in many positions to make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. There are several kinds of hospital beds available. Most often, the hospital beds are categorized as:

Manual

Semi-electric

Full Electric.

If you are looking for a hospital bed, in case you have a need for a home care setup, it is easy to get overwhelmed with the choices available.

The following list of questions that you can ask yourself can help deciding the kind of bed you really need and save some money and stress (which would already be high in this kind of a situation).

1. What is the age of the patient?

If the patient is a child, you can use a hospital bed of a smaller size and dimensions. A small twin bed may suffice for a child where as a grown up person would at least need a bed of full size.

Normally, the hospital beds are designed to cater to patients of all weights and sizes, but it would be good to ask about the bed frame requirements for the patient in mind.

2. What is the condition of the patient?

If the patient needs assistance with all types of movement and getting on or off the hospital bed, you would need to look for a bed that is adjustable in height also. Senior people may need additional railings for assistance for example.

3. What height of the bed would be the best for the patient?

If the hospital bed you need does not need height adjustments, you might want to consider what height would be optimum to choose. Neither very high or a very low height of the bed is helpful for the patient to get on or off the bed or for the person who is attending to the patient’s needs. Depending on the height of the patient, you would need to decide the optimum height of the bed.

4. Would you need to change the location of the bed and how often?

Most beds would have coasters and brake locks. If you think you would need to or would like to relocate the bed sometimes, it is a good idea to go with a bed with large rubber wheels and brake locks to avoid accidents.

5. Would the bed be staffed? Would someone be around to help the patient?

If the bed is not to be staffed by a professional nurse and if the patient is left alone to attend to his/her needs, an automatic electric bed can help to lower or raise the height or to change positions by the patient using a remote control.

Electric beds also help the person who is attending to the patient. It might be easy to raise the head using an automatic bed function which can have a smooth movement and no risk of dropping the head back by mistake which can be really harmful and painful to the patient.

6. How often the linen or the lining on the bed would need a change?

If the linen or the lining of the bed would need a change too often, you would need some way to either move the patient on another bed while changing the sheets or move the patient on one side of the bed and change the linen on the other side. You can then roll/scoot the patient back on the clean side and remove the dirty linen. For such kind of methods, you would need a bed that is wide enough so to prevent the patient from falling down to the ground while the sheets are being changed.

7. What is the duration that you might need the bed for?

Many a times, the injury is known to heal up in a certain duration – days, weeks or months. If you know you would not need the hospital bed for a long time, it might be a good idea to rent one. If you need it for some time, you can plan to use it for the patient for however long and then sell the bed off. You would need to do the math to find out what is the most cost effective and least stressful for both you and the patient.

You can also look for an option to buy a used bed if buying a new one is not an option.

8. For how long would the patient be on the bed each day?

If the patient would need to be on the bed continuously or for long hours every day, you would need to get a mattress that suits that purpose. Mattresses with hard springs or those that are too soft may create bed sores on the patient add to the pain thereby making the recovery more difficult.

The mattress on a hospital bed should be able to take the shape of the bed when the hospital bed is adjusted. If the head or the legs section is raised, some mattresses might create uneven folds thereby hurting the patient and making the bed position more uncomfortable than vice versa.

9. Would you need any accessories for the bed?

You might want to ask what kind of accessories you would need with the bed. This is not the complete list, but some to just give you an idea are:

Drip stand

Assist rails

Bed Side rails

Bed Table

Alert systems, Alarms

Entertainment

Are hospital beds also electric beds?

Hospital beds are adjustable beds that may or may not be electric beds depending upon if the adjustable features are controlled by electric motors or are adjusted manually using mechanical means. In most modern hospitals, the patient beds are electric beds or automatic adjustable beds that can change position or shape of the sleeping surface by using the buttons on a remote control or the side of the bed.

Why use electric beds?

Electric beds are adjustable in many ways. The different positions of the bed can be controlled electronic switches that turn electric motors or actuators to move the bed up or down or to raise the back or the lower portion the adjustable bed so as to put the patient in different positions in an hospital. However, electric beds are also becoming more and more common outside the hospitals and in the homes where people are seeking for more and more comfort.

Electric beds can be adjusted to different shapes which have many health benefits. Sleeping with the legs on a raised up plateau on the lower part of the bed can help mitigate the symptoms of the restless legs syndrome. Sleeping with the heads and the upper part of the body in the raised inclined position helps improving breathing, blood circulation and controls the acid reflux disease.

The adjustable beds also provide comfort if one just needs to sit up with the back raised, to read a book or to watch a TV or may be to just be with a partner in that position.

The electric adjustable beds can also be raised or lowered using a button. This feature also becomes very useful to the elderly and the sick at home as getting on and off the bed becomes easier and safe if the bed can be lowered such that one can rest the feet on the ground before getting off or on the bed.

Are electric beds safe?

The electric adjustable beds are designed and manufactured using the guidelines issues by the federal government as these beds are commonly used in the hospitals and nursing homes. However, one might need to use common precautions and child proof means so to avoid any body arm getting trapped in any of the moving parts of the bed. It may also not be advisable to use adjustable beds for kids use, since kids normally do not need or seek comforts as they are more active than the grown ups. Also, jumping on the bed may not be safe for the kids and the adjustable bed as extreme jerks can break or damage the mechanical movement assemblies or damage the wiring or electronic parts of an electric adjustable bed.

When the electric adjustable beds are used according to the specifications defined in the manual of the bed by the manufacturer, these beds are pretty safe and useful as evident from the widespread use in the hospitals.

Do electric beds fit in the bedroom décor?

The electric adjustable beds for homes do not really look like the ones seen in the hospitals. If you get an adjustable bed for home, it comes with the normal bed rails and wooden frame with standard or customized head board. When the adjustable bed is in the flat position, one may not be even able to distinguish it from a normal traditional bed.

Even when the positions of the adjustable bed are changed, the wall hugging design keeps the mechanical parts hidden and provides the comfort by keeping the person close to the switch on the walls or the bedside tables.

What is the type of mattress used for an electric bed?

Electric beds used at home are different from those found in the hospitals. The hospital beds have the sizes defined for the hospital use. However, the adjustable beds that are designed for home use, have standard bed sizes just like the traditional beds.

The adjustable beds do not use the common spring mattresses that are so commonly found on the traditional beds. The mattress for an electric adjustable bed is flexible so that it can bend or shape itself along with the surface of the bed without crumpling over.

Can I use standard bed linens with the electric bed?

Since the mattresses used for an electric adjustable bed are the same as the traditional beds at home, most adjustable beds allow the use of the standard bed linens. If an electric adjustable bed has been built according to custom specifications, one might need to have the mattress and the bed linens also customized.

We did some research to figure out why after all a double bed is called a double bed! Interestingly enough, a double bed is not equal to two single sized (or the twin sized beds, as commonly called in the US) put side by side! The term double bed is more popular in the Great Britain. It is also commonly used in the countries that were once ruled by Britain.

A double bed allows two people to sleep together. It is a great size bed allowing a couple to sleep together in a comfortably sized bed that does not take much space in the room. With each person getting about 27 inches to sleep, one, especially who is used to a king size bed, might find a double bed too cramped, but it might still be an ideal bed size for a loving couple! However, if one of them snores or kicks a lot while sleeping, then you are right, a double bed might be too small as the other person would like to have a bit of a room amongst them!

However, the size of a double bed has made it very popular in many countries in Europe and Asia. In countries like India, a bed for a couple is almost invariably a double bed. Other sizes, like the ones popular in the US, have not become so popular there yet. But it may only be a matter of time that the double bed would often get replaced with a queen or a king sized bed especially in homes that have enough space.

Double beds normally have a hard flat top which eliminates the need of a box spring. The mattress is directly placed on the top of the double bed, which is made from a plywood with a few supports running under it width wise that prevent any sagging of the top surface. Such a design provides a good flat surface that does not need a very thick mattress. Therefore, the height of a double bed does not normally need any bedside steps as often needed with king sized beds or beds that use both a box spring and a thick mattress on top of it.

Home with smaller rooms, have double beds with storage space. The whole space under the bed is converted into big boxes that either have drawers on the sides of the bed, or have the top of the bed as “lids” of the bed boxes. Since the space under a double is large enough, it can even hold large items that are not used often. Heavy storage however makes the overall bed too heavy making it very difficult to move it to a different location without emptying it and making it lighter before the move.

I have often seen that double beds can often be split into two beds. This is not normally for allowing two people to sleep separately, but to add flexibility while moving the bed to a different room or location or to even transport it to another home. Double beds often do not disassemble completely as most American beds do. The head board of a double bed also splits from the center. Such a double is bed is basically two beds put side by side. The headboard and foot board are so designed that the split is not easily visible.

If a double bed has a split bed design, the mattress also needs to be splittable to add to the flexibility. However, since a split mattress creates a join while put together, the join creates an uneven surface making it uncomfortable for the people sleeping on it. Therefore, even though the bed is splittable, the mattress on a double bed is often in one single piece design.
