Is the standard length of 75 inches for twin bed good enough for tall people?

What is a California king bed?

Many people find the length of a king size bed to be a bit short. Therefore, another version of a king bed also called as California King bed is also available in the market. A California King bed is 72 in wide and 84 in long which means it is 4 inches less in width than the standard king bed but it is also 4 inches more in length than a standard king bed.

How does the height vary with the size of a bed?

The height of the bed is not standardized like the widths and lengths of the king beds, queen beds, twin beds and full beds are. The width and length of the bed are standardized so that the mattresses and the bed linens can be standardized too. However, the mattresses are available in standard thickness sizes so that the fitted sheets can be used on them. The biggest risk with hospital beds is of patient death or injury from entrapment in the openings and gaps in hospital bed systems. There are tens of incidents of patients getting caught, trapped, entagled or strangled in hospital beds.

4. Would you need to change the location of the bed and how often?

Most beds would have coasters and brake locks. If you think you would need to or would like to relocate the bed sometimes, it is a good idea to go with a bed with large rubber wheels and brake locks to avoid accidents.

5. Would the bed be staffed? Would someone be around to help the patient?

If the bed is not to be staffed by a professional nurse and if the patient is left alone to attend to his/her needs, an automatic electric bed can help to lower or raise the height or to change positions by the patient using a remote control.

Electric beds also help the person who is attending to the patient. It might be easy to raise the head using an automatic bed function which can have a smooth movement and no risk of dropping the head back by mistake which can be really harmful and painful to the patient.

6. How often the linen or the lining on the bed would need a change?

If the linen or the lining of the bed would need a change too often, you would need some way to either move the patient on another bed while changing the sheets or move the patient on one side of the bed and change the linen on the other side. You can then roll/scoot the patient back on the clean side and remove the dirty linen. For such kind of methods, you would need a bed that is wide enough so to prevent the patient from falling down to the ground while the sheets are being changed.

7. What is the duration that you might need the bed for?

Many a times, the injury is known to heal up in a certain duration – days, weeks or months. If you know you would not need the hospital bed for a long time, it might be a good idea to rent one. If you need it for some time, you can plan to use it for the patient for however long and then sell the bed off. You would need to do the math to find out what is the most cost effective and least stressful for both you and the patient.

You can also look for an option to buy a used bed if buying a new one is not an option.

8. For how long would the patient be on the bed each day?

If the patient would need to be on the bed continuously or for long hours every day, you would need to get a mattress that suits that purpose. Mattresses with hard springs or those that are too soft may create bed sores on the patient add to the pain thereby making the recovery more difficult.

The mattress on a hospital bed should be able to take the shape of the bed when the hospital bed is adjusted. If the head or the legs section is raised, some mattresses might create uneven folds thereby hurting the patient and making the bed position more uncomfortable than vice versa.

9. Would you need any accessories for the bed?

Are hospital beds also electric beds?

Hospital beds are adjustable beds that may or may not be electric beds depending upon if the adjustable features are controlled by electric motors or are adjusted manually using mechanical means. In most modern hospitals, the patient beds are electric beds or automatic adjustable beds that can change position or shape of the sleeping surface by using the buttons on a remote control or the side of the bed.

Why use electric beds?

Electric beds are adjustable in many ways. The different positions of the bed can be controlled electronic switches that turn electric motors or actuators to move the bed up or down or to raise the back or the lower portion the adjustable bed so as to put the patient in different positions in an hospital. However, electric beds are also becoming more and more common outside the hospitals and in the homes where people are seeking for more and more comfort.

Electric beds can be adjusted to different shapes which have many health benefits. Sleeping with the legs on a raised up plateau on the lower part of the bed can help mitigate the symptoms of the restless legs syndrome. Sleeping with the heads and the upper part of the body in the raised inclined position helps improving breathing, blood circulation and controls the acid reflux disease.

Can I use standard bed linens with the electric bed?

Since the mattresses used for an electric adjustable bed are the same as the traditional beds at home, most adjustable beds allow the use of the standard bed linens. If an electric adjustable bed has been built according to custom specifications, one might need to have the mattress and the bed linens also customized.

We did some research to figure out why after all a double bed is called a double bed! Interestingly enough, a double bed is not equal to two single sized (or the twin sized beds, as commonly called in the US) put side by side! The term double bed is more popular in the Great Britain. It is also commonly used in the countries that were once ruled by Britain.

A double bed allows two people to sleep together. It is a great size bed allowing a couple to sleep together in a comfortably sized bed that does not take much space in the room. With each person getting about 27 inches to sleep, one, especially who is used to a king size bed, might find a double bed too cramped, but it might still be an ideal bed size for a loving couple! However, if one of them snores or kicks a lot while sleeping, then you are right, a double bed might be too small as the other person would like to have a bit of a room amongst them!

However, the size of a double bed has made it very popular in many countries in Europe and Asia. In countries like India, a bed for a couple is almost invariably a double bed. Other sizes, like the ones popular in the US, have not become so popular there yet. But it may only be a matter of time that the double bed would often get replaced with a queen or a king sized bed especially in homes that have enough space.

Double beds normally have a hard flat top which eliminates the need of a box spring. The mattress is directly placed on the top of the double bed, which is made from a plywood with a few supports running under it width wise that prevent any sagging of the top surface. Such a design provides a good flat surface that does not need a very thick mattress. Therefore, the height of a double bed does not normally need any bedside steps as often needed with king sized beds or beds that use both a box spring and a thick mattress on top of it.

Home with smaller rooms, have double beds with storage space. The whole space under the bed is converted into big boxes that either have drawers on the sides of the bed, or have the top of the bed as “lids” of the bed boxes. Since the space under a double is large enough, it can even hold large items that are not used often. Heavy storage however makes the overall bed too heavy making it very difficult to move it to a different location without emptying it and making it lighter before the move.

I have often seen that double beds can often be split into two beds. This is not normally for allowing two people to sleep separately, but to add flexibility while moving the bed to a different room or location or to even transport it to another home. Double beds often do not disassemble completely as most American beds do. The head board of a double bed also splits from the center. Such a double is bed is basically two beds put side by side. The headboard and foot board are so designed that the split is not easily visible.

If a double bed has a split bed design, the mattress also needs to be splittable to add to the flexibility. However, since a split mattress creates a join while put together, the join creates an uneven surface making it uncomfortable for the people sleeping on it. Therefore, even though the bed is splittable, the mattress on a double bed is often in one single piece design.

Why would people need to have different settings on each side of the bed? The young couples may be fine having the bed with the same firmness, however, the would-be seniors and the seniors often have different needs for each partner. The men like their mattresses to be more firm whereas the women like their mattresses to be little on the softer side. This is because as the body gains years, the aches and pains in the body become more common. Sleeping on an uncomfortable bed only aggravates those aches and pains. Also, as one ages, good sleep becomes more difficult to have. An comfortable mattress may only add to the problem than helping to solve it. Therefore, the concept of dual adjustable beds, having dual adjustable mattresses came up.

There are several companies selling with different brand names that allow you change the firmness of the air mattress and have different setting on either side of the bed.
